5 Benefits of LED Upgrades Beyond Energy Savings

Beyond the bill: safety, productivity, less maintenance, smart controls and a fixed monthly cost. The five LED upgrade benefits, with the honest limits.

Energy savings are the number that gets an LED upgrade approved.

For example, at Oxfam's Milton Keynes distribution centre, one of our UK customers, a 314-fitting upgrade lifted energy efficiency by 50% and saves 34 MWh a year. Ask the people who work under those lights what changed, though, and they talk about the sorting floor, the smoothness of the install, and a cost the charity can plan around.

An LED upgrade delivers five benefits beyond the electricity bill:

  1. A safer workplace, because hazards are easier to see.
  2. Better concentration and comfort for the people doing the work.
  3. A much shorter maintenance list.
  4. A building that manages its own lighting through smart controls.
  5. A lighting cost that stays fixed for the full term under Lighting as a Service.

This article takes each one in turn, with the honest limits alongside. It's written for the decision-maker who has seen the kWh projection and wants to know what else the spend buys.

Does better lighting make a workplace safer?

Yes, and the mechanism is simple: people avoid hazards they can see.

Poor lighting hides obstacles, deepens shadows around machinery and vehicle routes, and forces eyes to work harder than they should. The Health and Safety Executive treats lighting as a workplace health and safety factor in its own right: its Lighting at Work guidance (HSG38) covers everything from glare to the contrast between a task and its background.

The safety gain comes from the design, and a proper upgrade starts with one.

That means the right lux level for each task, uniform coverage without dark patches between fittings, and glare kept within limits. For example, at Siemens, we replaced 2,426 fittings. The new design lifted light levels to over 500 lux across the production floor, exceeding the UK standards for manufacturing environments, with uniform coverage throughout the site.

Does lighting quality affect productivity and wellbeing?

Yes. Flicker, glare and poor colour rendering each make work slower and more tiring, and all three are common in ageing installations.

Flicker from worn fluorescent tubes or failing LED drivers causes eye strain and fatigue over a working day. Glare forces people to look away from the task. And a low colour rendering index (CRI, the measure of how accurately a light source shows colour) makes fine visual work harder. The HSE's Lighting at Work guidance covers all three effects, and none of them shows up on an electricity bill.

Good lighting is task-specific.

A picking aisle, an inspection bench and a break room need different light levels and different colour temperatures. That is why an upgrade should start from a lighting design rather than a like-for-like swap. For example, at Oxfam, the new fittings were specified with a high CRI, which made it easier for staff to sort and identify donated clothing.

How much maintenance does an LED upgrade remove?

Most of the routine, and nearly all of the work at height. Fluorescent and halogen systems fail lamp by lamp, so somebody is always sourcing tubes, booking access equipment and swapping fittings above a working floor. Modern LED fittings run for years without attention.

When an LED fitting does fail, the cause is usually the driver rather than the LED itself.

That matters for cost, because the access usually costs more than the part: a trained operative, a scissor lift, and a pause in whatever was happening underneath the fitting.

Under Lighting as a Service, maintenance is included for the full term. A failed driver is our cost and our visit.

The caveat: if your system is recent, healthy and rarely failing, maintenance alone is a weak reason to upgrade. It is one benefit of a project that pays for itself on energy; on its own it rarely justifies one.

What do smart controls add to an LED upgrade?

Occupancy sensing and daylight dimming, which stop a building lighting empty spaces at full output. Motion sensors switch areas down or off when nobody is in them; daylight-harvesting photocells dim fittings when natural light is already doing the job. Controls add a further saving on top of the fitting swap, because even the most efficient LED wastes money lighting an empty aisle.

Both sites above run them. At Siemens, the factory gets a lot of natural daylight, so the system dims automatically as sunlight enters the working areas. At Oxfam, sensors and photocells across all 314 fittings are part of why the site saves 23 tonnes of CO2 a year.

The carbon follows the kilowatt-hours.

Can lighting costs be made fixed and predictable?

Yes. Under Lighting as a Service the monthly fee is fixed for the full term, with zero indexation. The figure you approve in month one is the figure you pay in year five.

That certainty is the point of the model.

We survey, design, fund, install and maintain the system, and the fixed fee comes out of the energy savings. There is no capital outlay to approve and no maintenance budget to hold in reserve. For example, at Oxfam, the fixed monthly cost was set against the charity's budget, and the energy savings are reinvested in its core mission. Simon Hardwick, Oxfam's Warehouse Manager, said:

To be equally clear about who this does not suit: Lighting as a Service is built for buildings with long operating hours and a reasonable number of fittings. If your premises are small, your lease is short, or your current system is recent and still meeting its design levels, the savings will not cover a fee worth signing, and the honest answer is to keep your money.
