The Challenge

Upgrading to LED with a Turnkey Solution

Siemens, a global manufacturing company headquartered in the United States, recognised the need to upgrade its factory lighting. The current lighting system was inefficient and had multiple opportunities for improvement. Although the company had been contemplating an upgrade for some time, they sought a partner to manage the entire project. They required a comprehensive, one-stop-shop solution to handle everything from planning to installation.

Alongside operational and regulatory challenges, Siemens had ambitious environmental targets. The company aimed to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and cut its kilowatt-hour consumption by at least 10% annually.

“We’d been looking to upgrade our lighting to LED for a number of years now, but it was getting round to the scoping of the project, finding the product, and then fitting it, was proving too much for us.”
The Solution

A Bespoke, Turnkey LED Upgrade

Siemens partnered with LumenStream to provide a complete turnkey service, managing the entire project from start to finish. This approach was a perfect fit for Siemens, leaving LumenStream to organise everything from lighting manufacturers to contractors to project managing electricians, without needing extensive in-house capacity or manpower. The solution involved a comprehensive upgrade of all 2,426 light fittings to modern, energy-efficient LEDs. The new lighting system was designed to significantly increase lux levels and improve uniformity throughout the site, bringing the facility up to the required UK standards for manufacturing environments.

Beyond the simple fittings, LumenStream integrated smart controls to maximise energy savings and operational efficiency. The team introduced motion sensors and daylight harvesting controls. Since the factory had a lot of natural daylight, the new system was configured to dim the lights automatically as sunlight entered the working environment, ensuring that energy was only used when and where it was needed. The installation was expertly managed to be non-disruptive, with the project team working safely and efficiently without impeding Siemens’ continuous operations.

The Transformation

Brighter, Safer, and More Sustainable

The LumenStream project delivered exceptional results, significantly improving lighting quality and supporting Siemens’ sustainability goals. The facility now has uniform, high-quality lighting throughout, with lux levels exceeding the UK standards for manufacturing environments. This increase to over 500 lux created a safer, more productive work environment for employees.

The project’s impact on energy efficiency was substantial, with the new LED system and smart controls resulting in an annual saving of approximately 305 MWh from the first phase alone. This has also significantly reduced the company’s carbon footprint, bringing them closer to their 2030 net-zero goal.

“I would definitely recommend using LumenStream because of how professional the service has been from start to finish.”

Conclusion

The Siemens project is a powerful case study in how a comprehensive LED lighting upgrade can address multiple business objectives. By partnering with LumenStream, Siemens was able to:

  • Elevate Lighting Standards: Improve lighting levels and uniformity to meet UK standards, creating a safer, more effective working environment.
  • Streamline Project Management: The turnkey service eliminated the logistical burden on Siemens, ensuring a smooth and efficient project from design to recycling.
  • Advance Sustainability Goals: The use of smart controls and energy-efficient LEDs significantly reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions, moving Siemens closer to its net-zero target.

This project demonstrates the value of investing in modern, smart lighting infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency, improve safety, and achieve critical corporate environmental goals.
