The Challenge

Aged Infrastructure & Operational Demands

Alexander Dennis is the UK’s leading bus manufacturer, specialising in double-deck and lightweight buses. Its AD24 aftermarket site in Anston offers services such as repair, rebuilding, refurbishment, and painting. The existing lighting infrastructure at the Anston site was outdated, expensive to replace, and not energy-efficient, especially when compared to modern LED technology.

"Our existing lighting was aged, expensive to replace, and less energy efficient to run compared with LED."

The company sought a solution that would enhance lighting quality and reduce consumption. The project needed to be completed without causing any disruption to their critical site activities- manufacturing, repairing, and refurbishing vehicles for the UK’s public transport fleet.

The Solution

A Bespoke LED Upgrade

LumenStream‘s approach began with strong collaboration and clear communication to fully understand Alexander Dennis’s specific requirements. We worked closely with their team to specify the correct lighting for each area of the site, from the workshops and paint booths to the offices.

The solution involved replacing the entire existing lighting infrastructure with new LEDs. To further enhance energy efficiency and align with modern sustainability practices, the new system was integrated with daylight harvesting photocells. This technology automatically adjusts light levels based on the amount of natural daylight, reducing energy consumption and associated costs. The project was seamlessly executed by a fast and efficient installation team, ensuring minimal disruption to the facility’s day-to-day operations.

The Transformation

Improved Efficiency & Operational Flow

The project successfully delivered significant improvements across the Alexander Dennis site. The new LED lighting not only increased lighting levels to meet UK manufacturing standards but also made the entire facility brighter. This enhanced visibility and improved working conditions for staff in all areas.

The best aspect of the LumenStream model is the cash flow benefit. There is no large deposit, only monthly payments over a 5-year period

From a financial perspective, the project delivered a significant cash flow benefit to Alexander Dennis through LumenStream’s unique Lighting as a Service (LaaS) model. The LaaS approach removed the necessity for a large upfront capital expenditure, as the project was financed through affordable monthly payments over five years. The cost savings and monthly charges were clearly outlined and explained from the start, ensuring a transparent and trustworthy process. This project achieves 90 MWh  of energy savings annually.

The operational savings and better lighting enabled Alexander Dennis to concentrate on its main activities of manufacturing, repairing, and refurbishing buses.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Alexander Dennis and LumenStream is a clear example of how strategic partnerships can drive operational excellence and sustainability. By upgrading to a modern, energy-efficient LED lighting system, Alexander Dennis not only improved its working environment and reduced its energy footprint but also secured a significant and immediate cash flow benefit. The success of this project demonstrates LumenStream’s ability to navigate complex operational environments and deliver tailored solutions that meet the specific needs of large-scale industrial clients.
