The Challenge

A Commitment to Sustainability and Operational Excellence

As a leading non-governmental organisation (NGO) in the UK, Oxfam is dedicated to its mission of fighting poverty and injustice, a commitment that extends to its operations.

A key aspect of their work involves the operation of large-scale distribution centres, including their site in Milton Keynes, which handles their online business, donated goods and new goods. The existing traditional lighting system at this facility presented a twofold challenge: it fell short of meeting current UK lighting standards and created an inefficient working environment.

“We were looking for a lighting upgrade, one- to be compliant with current legislation, and two- to improve the overall ambient lighting in the building.”

Furthermore, Oxfam’s sustainability goals demanded an energy-efficient solution that aligned with their values and contributed to their objectives.

The Solution

A Bespoke LED Upgrade with Integrated Controls

LumenStream delivered a customised solution that addressed Oxfam’s specific needs by replacing traditional light fittings with a new LED system. The project aimed to achieve a substantial increase in lighting levels, aligning the facility with UK standards for distribution centres. Beyond a simple fixture swap, the solution integrated intelligent controls to maximise energy efficiency. Motion sensors and daylight harvesting photocells were installed across all luminaires, ensuring the lights were only on when and where needed and that they dimmed when sufficient natural daylight was available. This control system was vital in achieving significant energy savings, a crucial factor for a non-profit organisation focused on cost-effective operations. The Oxfam Milton Keynes project saved 34 MWh per annum.

The Transformation

Improved Working Conditions and Enhanced Efficiency

The new lighting system brought about a remarkable transformation. The facility’s overall lighting ambience was massively improved. The new light fittings were specified with a high colour rendering index (CRI), making it easier for employees to sort and identify clothing, which directly improved the efficiency of this key operational process.

“I have to say that that was probably one of the smoothest installs that we’ve had of anything on site over the years.”

The project not only met compliance and energy efficiency goals but also improved the productivity and working conditions for the on-site team. The entire installation process was described as seamless, and the communication with the LumenStream team was excellent, ensuring minimal disruption to the centre’s vital operations.

Conclusion

The successful completion of the Oxfam project underscores the value of strategic, modern lighting solutions. By upgrading to an energy-efficient LED system with smart controls, Oxfam was able to significantly reduce its operational costs and environmental footprint, freeing up resources to be reinvested into their core charitable work.

The project’s success, achieved through a smooth, well-communicated process, demonstrates LumenStream’s ability to deliver tailored, high-impact solutions for organisations with unique operational needs. The new lighting system creates a brighter, safer and more efficient environment for Oxfam’s staff, while also championing the organisation’s commitment to sustainability.
