The Challenge

The Need for a Modern Solution

Cooper & Turner, a global manufacturer and distributor of safety-critical fasteners in Glasgow, was facing a common challenge: an outdated and inefficient lighting system. The pre-existing lighting infrastructure at Cooper & Turner’s Glasgow site presented several issues. The combination of old high-bay sodium lights, fluorescent tubes and halogen units resulted in poor lux levels and uniformity, impacting the working conditions for both employees and customers.

Furthermore, the legacy lighting was costly to maintain, posing a financial burden. For a company dedicated to sustainability, this was an opportunity to embrace new technology and make a tangible reduction in its environmental impact.

"Throughout the years, we’ve had the high-bay sodium lighting in place. Add to that, we’ve had the fluorescent tubes and the halogen units all over the place. They were starting to become very expensive to maintain."
The Solution

A Seamless LED Upgrade with Integrated Controls

LumenStream proposed a complete LED upgrade with Lighting as a Service (LaaS). This model was the most attractive aspect of LumenStream’s offer, as it required no capital expenditure from Cooper & Turner.

The project involved a complete overhaul of the lighting system to bring it in line with UK standards for manufacturing environments. The new LED units were equipped with integrated smart controls, including microwave sensors and photocell sensors. The sensors were programmed to dim or shut off lights in areas with no activity, ensuring maximum energy efficiency. This approach enabled approximately 60% of the warehouse to remain unlit when not in use, resulting in further savings.

The Transformation

Enhanced Working Conditions and Significant Savings

The project's results were transformational. The new lighting system significantly improved lux levels and uniformity, creating a brighter and safer working environment for employees. The integration of smart controls helped Cooper & Turner become a switchless facility in applicable areas, further enhancing their energy efficiency and sustainability efforts.

"LumenStream’s model- no capital expenditure- that was the most attractive thing to Cooper & Turner. And it was a no-brainer."

The project has yielded impressive energy savings. The installation of 453 new light fittings resulted in an annual saving of 80 MWh per year. This commitment to sustainability and cost saving was a key factor in Cooper & Turner’s satisfaction with the project.

Conclusion

The collaboration between LumenStream and Cooper & Turner is a prime example of how modern, innovative solutions can address business challenges while supporting environmental goals. The no-capital-expenditure model provided a risk-free path to a brighter, safer and more energy-efficient facility. As a result, Cooper & Turner not only achieved significant cost savings on maintenance and energy but also reinforced its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The communication and professionalism of the LumenStream team, from proposal to installation, was described by Cooper & Turner as “top class”, making the entire process seamless and successful.
